Epidemic of Eating Disorders
Americans tend to believe that eating disorders are bad, but there are some people who believe that there is nothing wrong with eating disorders. Within the time of anorexia becoming more prominent, there have been websites that promote and encourage the disease. These websites post ‘thinspiration,’ photos of extremely skinny models and celebrities, and actually provide “tips” on how to live with eating disorders and how to hide them from others people (“Eating Disorders” par. 30). The people who run and control these websites believe that they are not promoting these disorders. They believe that they are support centers for people with the disease, but research from Issues and Controversies database provides information from doctors who believe that these websites “encourage self-destructive behavior, and that the warnings are more of an enticement than a deterrent” (“Eating Disorders” par. 31). Many argue that it is common knowledge to young girls know that Barbie is just plastic and that her body type and beauty standards are unrealistic. However, Mattel, the company that makes Barbie, has just recently come out with new Barbies. These Barbies come in three new forms. There is now Petite, Curvy, and Tall Barbie. These new dolls were created to promote self confidence. On another note, weight lifting supplements can be very helpful to those who are trying to gain muscle mass, but also remain at a healthy weight. With the right diet and exercise balance people do not need to go to extreme measures to lose weight.
